How to convert a video to MP3 on iPhone and Android

Step-by-step instructions to turn a video from your phone’s gallery into an MP3, without installing an app – plus where to find the file afterwards.

Your phone is probably where most of your videos live: concerts, voice messages, classes, family moments. Here is how to get the audio as an MP3 directly on the phone, without installing a single app.

On iPhone and iPad (Safari)

  1. Open Safari and go to videos-to-mp3.com.
  2. Tap Choose files. A menu appears: choose Photo Library to pick a video from Photos, or Choose File to browse the Files app.
  3. Select one or several videos and tap Add. iOS may “prepare” or compress the video for a moment – this is normal.
  4. The conversion starts automatically. When it says Ready, tap the play button to check the sound, then tap Download MP3.
  5. Confirm the download. The file is saved in Files → On My iPhone → Downloads (or iCloud Drive → Downloads, depending on your settings).

Tip: to listen to the MP3 in the Music app, you need to import it through a computer; otherwise, play it from the Files app, VLC for Mobile or any podcast/audio player that can open files.

Alternative: the Shortcuts app

If you convert videos often, create a shortcut: open Shortcuts, add the Encode Media action, turn on Audio Only, then add Save File. Enable “Show in Share Sheet”. From the Photos app, share any video to this shortcut to get an M4A audio file, offline.

On Android (Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox)

  1. Open your browser and go to videos-to-mp3.com.
  2. Tap Choose files, then choose Gallery, Photos or Files depending on your phone.
  3. Select the video. The upload and conversion start immediately.
  4. Tap Download MP3. The file goes into the Download folder, and you will find it in the Files / My Files app, or in your music player.

Common problems and solutions

  • “The file is larger than 100 MB”: open the video in Photos (iPhone) or Gallery (Android), tap Edit, trim it to the part you need and save it as a new clip. A 4K video weighs about 350–400 MB per minute, whereas the audio of the same minute is only 1.5 MB.
  • The upload is slow: switch to Wi-Fi. Mobile data upload speeds are often much lower than download speeds.
  • Nothing happens after the download on iPhone: tap the blue arrow icon in Safari’s address bar to see your downloads.
  • “No audio track”: the video was recorded without sound (e.g. muted screen recording, slow-motion clip with sound off).

Which format for a phone?

MP3 at 192 kbps is the best all-round choice. On iPhone, M4A integrates even better with Apple apps and is the base format for ringtones. For voice recordings you want to keep small, choose MP3 at 128 kbps. Want a ringtone? Follow our guide Make a ringtone from a video.
