What is an FLV file?
FLV (Flash Video) was the format of online video in the Flash era (YouTube, Dailymotion and others before 2015). Many people still have FLV files in old downloads or archives. Their audio is usually MP3 or AAC, sometimes the rare Nellymoser or Speex codecs used for webcams.
Since Flash Player no longer exists, converting FLV soundtracks to MP3 is the easiest way to keep them listenable.
Why convert to MP3?
MP3 is the most compatible audio format ever made: it plays on every phone, computer, car stereo, smart TV, smart speaker and MP3 player, without exception. Its compression removes sounds the ear barely perceives, giving files about ten times smaller than CD quality. At 192 kbps it is transparent for most listeners; at 320 kbps it is the best MP3 can do. Choose MP3 when you do not know where the audio will be played – it will always work.
Tips for FLV files
- FLV audio is often already MP3: choose the same bitrate as the source (usually 96–128 kbps).
- Webcam FLV recordings are mono: 96–128 kbps is enough.
- Damaged FLV files often still convert, because FFmpeg skips broken frames.
Which audio format should you pick?
| Format | Type | Size for 1 min | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Lossy, universal | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | Everything: phones, cars, speakers, music players |
| M4A | Lossy (AAC), efficient | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | iPhone, iPad, Apple Music, Android |
| WAV | Uncompressed (PCM) | ≈ 10 MB | Audio editing, DAWs, CDs, transcription tools |
| FLAC | Lossless, compressed | ≈ 5–7 MB | Archiving, hi-fi listening, editing |
| OGG | Lossy (Vorbis), open | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | Games, Linux, open-source projects |
| OPUS | Lossy, most efficient | ≈ 1 MB at 128 kbps | Voice, podcasts, small files, web |
FLV to MP3: frequently asked questions
Is the FLV to MP3 converter free?
Yes. Videos-to-MP3 is completely free: no subscription, no watermark, no limit on the length of the audio. The only limits are 100 MB per file and a fair-use cap of 60 conversions per hour.
Will the MP3 file lose quality?
The audio is taken directly from the original track. With a high bitrate (or a lossless format such as WAV or FLAC) the difference is inaudible. A converter can never add quality that was not in the source, so a low-quality video will give a low-quality audio file.
Can I convert FLV to MP3 on my phone?
Yes. The converter runs in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet and Edge. On iPhone, tap “Choose files”, pick the video from Photos or Files, then save the result with the download button.
Are my files kept on your server?
No. Each file is processed in a private temporary folder and deleted as soon as the MP3 file has been sent back to you. Nothing is published or shared.
What if my FLV file is bigger than 100 MB?
Use the trim options of your phone’s video editor or a free tool such as VLC or HandBrake to cut it into parts, or extract the audio locally with FFmpeg (see our FFmpeg guide).
