What is an MP4 file?
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widespread video format in the world. Phones, cameras, screen recorders, WhatsApp, Zoom and almost every website produce MP4. Inside, the sound is usually encoded in AAC at 96 to 256 kbps, sometimes in MP3, Opus or AC-3. Because AAC is already compressed, converting it to MP3 at 192 kbps or more keeps it sounding identical to the original for nearly everyone.
If you only need the audio for an Apple device, consider M4A: it is the same AAC audio in an audio-only container, and it is often smaller than an MP3 of the same quality.
Why convert to MP3?
MP3 is the most compatible audio format ever made: it plays on every phone, computer, car stereo, smart TV, smart speaker and MP3 player, without exception. Its compression removes sounds the ear barely perceives, giving files about ten times smaller than CD quality. At 192 kbps it is transparent for most listeners; at 320 kbps it is the best MP3 can do. Choose MP3 when you do not know where the audio will be played – it will always work.
Tips for MP4 files
- Recordings from iPhone and Android are usually 48 kHz AAC: 192 kbps MP3 is a perfect match.
- Screen recordings sometimes contain two audio tracks (system + microphone): the converter keeps the first one.
- For an MP4 with silent parts at the beginning, set a start time in the advanced options.
Which audio format should you pick?
| Format | Type | Size for 1 min | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Lossy, universal | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | Everything: phones, cars, speakers, music players |
| M4A | Lossy (AAC), efficient | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | iPhone, iPad, Apple Music, Android |
| WAV | Uncompressed (PCM) | ≈ 10 MB | Audio editing, DAWs, CDs, transcription tools |
| FLAC | Lossless, compressed | ≈ 5–7 MB | Archiving, hi-fi listening, editing |
| OGG | Lossy (Vorbis), open | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | Games, Linux, open-source projects |
| OPUS | Lossy, most efficient | ≈ 1 MB at 128 kbps | Voice, podcasts, small files, web |
MP4 to MP3: frequently asked questions
Is the MP4 to MP3 converter free?
Yes. Videos-to-MP3 is completely free: no subscription, no watermark, no limit on the length of the audio. The only limits are 100 MB per file and a fair-use cap of 60 conversions per hour.
Will the MP3 file lose quality?
The audio is taken directly from the original track. With a high bitrate (or a lossless format such as WAV or FLAC) the difference is inaudible. A converter can never add quality that was not in the source, so a low-quality video will give a low-quality audio file.
Can I convert MP4 to MP3 on my phone?
Yes. The converter runs in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet and Edge. On iPhone, tap “Choose files”, pick the video from Photos or Files, then save the result with the download button.
Are my files kept on your server?
No. Each file is processed in a private temporary folder and deleted as soon as the MP3 file has been sent back to you. Nothing is published or shared.
What if my MP4 file is bigger than 100 MB?
Use the trim options of your phone’s video editor or a free tool such as VLC or HandBrake to cut it into parts, or extract the audio locally with FFmpeg (see our FFmpeg guide).
