What is a MOV file?
MOV is Apple’s QuickTime format. It is what iPhones, iPads and many Macs record by default, and it is popular in video editing (ProRes). The audio inside is generally AAC on phones, or uncompressed PCM on cameras and editing exports. MOV files play well on Apple devices but less reliably on Windows, Android and car systems – which is exactly why converting the sound to MP3 is so useful.
If your MOV comes from an editing program with PCM audio, choose WAV or FLAC to keep every detail, or MP3 at 320 kbps for a compact copy.
Why convert to MP3?
MP3 is the most compatible audio format ever made: it plays on every phone, computer, car stereo, smart TV, smart speaker and MP3 player, without exception. Its compression removes sounds the ear barely perceives, giving files about ten times smaller than CD quality. At 192 kbps it is transparent for most listeners; at 320 kbps it is the best MP3 can do. Choose MP3 when you do not know where the audio will be played – it will always work.
Tips for MOV files
- iPhone videos in HEVC (H.265) are fully supported: only the audio is read, so the video codec does not matter.
- Large 4K MOV clips quickly exceed 100 MB: trim them in the Photos app first, or send a shorter clip.
- Use M4A if the audio will be played back on an iPhone or in Apple Music.
Which audio format should you pick?
| Format | Type | Size for 1 min | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Lossy, universal | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | Everything: phones, cars, speakers, music players |
| M4A | Lossy (AAC), efficient | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | iPhone, iPad, Apple Music, Android |
| WAV | Uncompressed (PCM) | ≈ 10 MB | Audio editing, DAWs, CDs, transcription tools |
| FLAC | Lossless, compressed | ≈ 5–7 MB | Archiving, hi-fi listening, editing |
| OGG | Lossy (Vorbis), open | ≈ 1.4 MB at 192 kbps | Games, Linux, open-source projects |
| OPUS | Lossy, most efficient | ≈ 1 MB at 128 kbps | Voice, podcasts, small files, web |
MOV to MP3: frequently asked questions
Is the MOV to MP3 converter free?
Yes. Videos-to-MP3 is completely free: no subscription, no watermark, no limit on the length of the audio. The only limits are 100 MB per file and a fair-use cap of 60 conversions per hour.
Will the MP3 file lose quality?
The audio is taken directly from the original track. With a high bitrate (or a lossless format such as WAV or FLAC) the difference is inaudible. A converter can never add quality that was not in the source, so a low-quality video will give a low-quality audio file.
Can I convert MOV to MP3 on my phone?
Yes. The converter runs in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet and Edge. On iPhone, tap “Choose files”, pick the video from Photos or Files, then save the result with the download button.
Are my files kept on your server?
No. Each file is processed in a private temporary folder and deleted as soon as the MP3 file has been sent back to you. Nothing is published or shared.
What if my MOV file is bigger than 100 MB?
Use the trim options of your phone’s video editor or a free tool such as VLC or HandBrake to cut it into parts, or extract the audio locally with FFmpeg (see our FFmpeg guide).
