    What is an OPUS file?

Opus is the most efficient modern audio codec. WhatsApp voice messages, Telegram voice notes, Discord recordings and many web audio files are Opus (sometimes with the .ogg or .oga extension). Quality is excellent at small sizes, but iPhones, older Windows versions and many cars cannot play .opus files.

Converting Opus to MP3 is the simplest way to keep or share a voice message: 128 kbps is plenty for speech.

    Why convert to MP3?

MP3 is the most compatible audio format ever made: it plays on every phone, computer, car stereo, smart TV, smart speaker and MP3 player, without exception. Its compression removes sounds the ear barely perceives, giving files about ten times smaller than CD quality. At 192 kbps it is transparent for most listeners; at 320 kbps it is the best MP3 can do. Choose MP3 when you do not know where the audio will be played – it will always work.

    Tips for OPUS files

    • WhatsApp voice notes (.opus or .ogg) convert in less than a second.
    • Tick “Normalize volume” for quiet voice messages.
    • For music in Opus, choose 192 kbps MP3.

OPUS to MP3: frequently asked questions

Is the OPUS to MP3 converter free?

Yes. Videos-to-MP3 is completely free: no subscription, no watermark, no limit on the length of the audio. The only limits are 100 MB per file and a fair-use cap of 60 conversions per hour.

Will the MP3 file lose quality?

The audio is taken directly from the original track. With a high bitrate (or a lossless format such as WAV or FLAC) the difference is inaudible. A converter can never add quality that was not in the source, so a low-quality video will give a low-quality audio file.

Can I convert OPUS to MP3 on my phone?

Yes. The converter runs in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet and Edge. On iPhone, tap “Choose files”, pick the video from Photos or Files, then save the result with the download button.

Are my files kept on your server?

No. Each file is processed in a private temporary folder and deleted as soon as the MP3 file has been sent back to you. Nothing is published or shared.

What if my OPUS file is bigger than 100 MB?

Use the trim options of your phone’s video editor or a free tool such as VLC or HandBrake to cut it into parts, or extract the audio locally with FFmpeg (see our FFmpeg guide).
