How to make a ringtone from a video (iPhone and Android)

Extract a few seconds of sound from a video and set it as your ringtone or notification sound on Android and iPhone – step by step, for free.

A funny moment from a family video, your child’s first words, a riff from your band’s rehearsal: turning a video into a ringtone takes a few minutes. Here is how to do it on both Android and iPhone.

Step 1: extract the right part of the sound

  1. Find the exact start and end of the moment you want in your video player (for example 0:42 to 1:05).
  2. Open Videos-to-MP3 and click Advanced options.
  3. Enter the start and end times. Keep the clip under 30 seconds.
  4. Tick Normalize volume so the ringtone is audible in a noisy place.
  5. Choose MP3 for Android or M4A for iPhone, then drop the video and download the result.

On Android

  1. Move the MP3 to the Ringtones folder of internal storage with the Files app (optional on most phones, but it makes it appear in the list).
  2. Open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone (wording varies by brand).
  3. Tap + or My sounds / Add ringtone and select your MP3.

For a single contact: open the contact, tap Edit → Ringtone. For notifications, put the file in the Notifications folder instead.

On iPhone

Apple only accepts ringtones in M4R format (an M4A file with a different extension) of at most 40 seconds (30 seconds for alert tones). Two methods:

With GarageBand (on the iPhone, free)

  1. Save the M4A from Videos-to-MP3 to the Files app.
  2. Open GarageBand, create a project with any instrument (e.g. Audio Recorder) and switch to the track view.
  3. Tap the loop icon, then Files, and drag your M4A onto the timeline.
  4. Go back to My Songs, long-press the project → Share → Ringtone → Export.
  5. Choose Use sound as… → Standard Ringtone.

With a computer (Finder or iTunes)

  1. Rename the downloaded file from .m4a to .m4r.
  2. Connect the iPhone, open it in Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows) and drag the M4R file onto the device.
  3. On the iPhone: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.

Tips for a great ringtone

  • Start right on the strongest sound: the first second matters most.
  • Avoid very bass-heavy sounds – phone speakers cannot reproduce them.
  • Loops work best: choose a passage that sounds natural when it repeats.
  • Respect copyright: your own videos are perfect material.
